This is the portal website for the Welsh Highland Railway in Porthmadog. There are several related websites, described .
During 2003, this website was upgraded to XHTML & CSS2. This should work ok in all modern web browsers. The main benefit is we can now aim for accessibility for people with disabilities too.
- Internet Explorer 7
- This is the browser used by most people. It's good and you get it free with Windows. It doesn't have complete web standard support though. There are lots of worries about its security: make sure you've got the latest version (v7) and disable ActiveX to be safe. V8 will be available soon.
- Firefox 2.0
- This is an excellent free browser for Windows/Linux/MacOS. It is related to Netscape which includes AOL branding. More secure and flexible than IE, Firefox is my clear choice; take a look.
- Safari
- This is an excellent free browser for MacOS. It is actually based on the core part of Mozilla/Firefox (called Gecko). Well respected.
- Opera 7
- The need for good web browsers is broad enough to include this one, which is not free. It's available for a wider range of platforms than probably any other, and you can get a version without paying if you don't mind its advertising panel.
- Acrobat Reader
- This is an add-on you'll need for a few documents on this website, in addition to your web browser.
The plan for this website is for increasing use of XHTML 1.1, because it clearly separates the content and structure of pages from their presentation. This works better in a wider range of browsers, especially those for disabled people. However, older browsers will work less and less well as new web standards leave them behind.
Therefore, if you don't have a modern browser (e.g. those listed above), please consider upgrading.
